Soccer Speed Training

Speed plays an important role in playing soccer. But unlike runners who do 100m dashes, soccer players need more strength to sustain and maintain their speed in the field. Speed in soccer playing refers to many aspects. For one, players should be quick thinking. Once on the field, they should be alert for strategies appropriate in a situation. They should also be fast in anticipating their opponent’s game plan to make appropriate counter attacks. But most of all, soccer players need quickness to be able to respond well in the game environment.

To bring up a team’s over all ability, soccer speed training is essential. However, most coaches omit speed improvement drills from their practice regimen. They concentrate more on endurance with distance running not knowing that speed work also involves other factors like acceleration, maximum velocity and speed endurance.

 

For soccer speed training, focus on developing the player’s acceleration. Snatching the ball from an opponent, driving the ball to the goal and breaking away from a guarding player all can be done easier with greater quickness. Instead of the player running speed bursts using the heels, soccer speed training should focus on the use of other leg parts such as the ankle, knee and hip. With this combination, the driving force with the whole body together will give faster acceleration. Along with training for the proper way to accelerate, maintaining full speed should also be included in soccer speed training. This training is done through running with an upright body while trying to stay relaxed. Players can then avoid sudden fatigue.

A soccer speed training program should include increasing speed endurance. That endurance represents the ability of the player to continue their pace longer without decelerating. Soccer speed training should be done on the field and during practice. With that consistent training, player performance will significantly increase. Soccer coaches who work speed exercises into their practices will notice the change in the team’s overall skill level.

Arsenal Squeak Newcastle to End Year at the Top

Arsenal entered Newcastle needing a victory to reclaim their spot at the top of the table.  After the final whistle blew, the Gunners left Newcastle with those points in hand and the top spot secured as 2016 comes to an end and the new year, and the second half of the campaign, begin. Their 0-1 victory over Newcastle was hardly the perfect game, but the match did accurately reflect both clubs’ position in the league: Arsenal stand at the top but on very shaky ground while Newcastle showed that they can play with the best but they need to improve if they want to do more than trip up other clubs trying to climb to the top of the table.

The match, in fact, was quite ugly.  From the first half action, it seemed both sides would have settled for a point, which is something you don’t like to see either from a home side or from the league leader.  Toon boss Alan Pardew packed his midfield with five players.  Gunner boss Arsene Wegner had to make due without Aaron Ramsey, his top goal-scorer, and Mezut Ozil, both out due to injury.

 

It wasn’t until the very end of the first half that things picked up with Newcastle on an attack that failed to produce a goal but left the crowd hopeful going into halftime. It was Arsenal who broke the lock in the 65th minute when Theo Walcott sent a free kick into the box that Olivier Giroud got his head on and tapped into the net. From there it was a chess match between the two longest serving managers in the Premier League, managers who have both praised and pushed one another.

 

Granted, it was an ugly chess match.  Wegner sent five men to the back while Pardew upped the attack, sending Hatem Ben Arfa to the front.  Ultimately, it was to no avail, however, the last twenty minutes were exciting despite the sense that the two teams were running an attacking and defending drill in front of fifty thousand paying customers. Perhaps both clubs deserved a point, but the team at the top of the league got all three while Newcastle slipped to the eighth spot.  Still, Newcastle fans have reason to be hopeful for the coming year and the second half of the campaign. As recently as October, Toon fans feared relegation, now their biggest fear is a January yard sale from owner Mike Ashley.  On the glass is half-full side, if the Magpies can keep their good form, Toon fans may enjoy a second-half run for a spot in Europe.

Despite being on top, there’s plenty to worry about for Arsenal fans.  While they have as good a shot as any for winning the league, there are plenty of “any” competing to win the league.  Half-way through the season, the point battle is tight:  Arsenal 42, Manchester City 41, and Chelsea 40.  Everton and Liverpool are nipping at their heels as well with 37 and 36 points.  Just below them are the defending champions who have the cash to improve come January.  There’s also post-Bale and post-AVB Tottenham.

 

It’s a long way until May.  In a neck and neck race, there’s room for a slip up or two.  But there are a bunch of necks in this race, a bunch of feet ready to trample.  To lose or to draw is to concede your spot, at least until the next week when you can try to grab it back, until, of course, there are no next weeks.

Tips For Goalkeepers

One of the hardest positions to play in Soccer is the goalkeeper. The great ones are easy to spot, and the bad ones are easily blamed for the team’s loss. The pressure of protecting a wide net is quite hard to manage, and can really be stressful for beginners. It’s important to approach the position with care, and learn the nuances of guarding the net, and learning how to dive against a coming attack. The defenders can only do so much, so it’s important to practice and utilize some tips.

The first thing to do is avoid watching the opponent’s eyes or head movements. When a striker approaches the open net, or tries to chip in the ball, they’ll try to use their body language to throw you off, never focus on that, focus on the ball. There is a split second to decide which way to follow, and wait for the ball to move away from the foot before diving. This kind of split second decision-making can be difficult to manage at first, but it takes practice and focus.

 

To familiarize the body and mind to what needs to be done to protect the goal, have the team shoot at the goalkeeper one by one, and in a pack. The best bet to gaining confidence is to painstakingly go through the motions of trying to block the ball. Even if a player misses the ball, doesn’t stop the oncoming scoring attempts during practice, it’s important to continue practicing to alleviate the stress involved with protecting the net.

Lastly, make sure to promote confidence in goalkeepers by praising stops, and trying to clear stress. A clear mind can focus on the task at hand, and create nerves of steel in real game situations. Concentrating on a clear mind, and trying to stop the ball in practice will help in the long term.
